It's time to rethink how we manage hormonal change
Hormonal and reproductive health issues and imbalances during menstruation and menopause stages can be confusing and challenging for young girls, adolescents, and women of all ages at different points of their lives.
These can have a huge impact on life, school/college, work, social life, relationships, and how girls, adolescents and young women view themselves and their identity. These symptoms and experiences are not visible and are unique to each individual, with varying levels of physical symptoms (comfortable to debilitating), emotional and psychological impact on wellbeing. The impact of menopause and hormonal challenges for Australian women is real

Menopause
is experienced by all women (50% of the population) during their lifetime. It is a natural decline in reproductive hormones when a woman reaches her 40s or 50s. The menopause stages are: premenopause, perimenopause, menopause (signalled by 12 months since last menstruation) and postmenopause.Women who experience premature or early menopause due to premature ovarian insufficiency (POI), surgical menopause, and medical menopause are at greater risk of experiencing psychological symptoms such as depression, anxiety and mood changes, a sense of loss, sadness and grief. They may also have mixed emotions and feelings about their body image, femininity, sexuality, and fertility. Poor or disturbed sleep is a very common symptom of menopause, with some studies indicating up to 63% of women are affected. It can make emotional and cognitive symptoms feel even worse if left untreated. By 2030, 1 billion women in the world will have entered or will be entering menopause.

Endometriosis
affects roughly 10% (190 million) of reproductive age young girls, adolescents, and women of all ages globally. It is a chronic disease associated with severe, life-impacting pain during periods, sexual intercourse, bowel movements and/or urination, chronic pelvic pain, abdominal bloating, nausea, fatigue, and sometimes depression, anxiety, and infertility.
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
is a complex hormonal condition resulting in irregular menstrual cycles, excessive facial and body hair growth, acne, obesity, reduced fertility and increased risk of diabetes.
Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)
is a combination of physical and emotional symptoms, such as bloating, headaches, and moodiness, young girls and women may experience 1-2 weeks before their period. For some, these symptoms maybe so severe and debilitating that they miss school or work. On average, women in their 30's are most likely to experience PMS symptoms.
Premenstrual Dysmorphic Disorder (PMDD)
is a severe form of PMDD, sometimes disabling extension of PMS. PMDD causes extreme mood shifts that can disrupt daily life and may damage relationships.
